When is it safe to drive again?

"When can I drive again?"

It sounds like a straightforward question, but if you've asked it after surgery, you've probably received some vague answers.

"When you're ready."

"When you're off pain medication."

"When you can slam on the brakes in an emergency."

The truth is, driving involves more than just sitting in a car.

It requires core stability to maintain posture, the ability to twist and turn to check blind spots, and sufficient reaction time for sudden stops. Your body needs to be ready for all of these movements, not just the act of sitting behind the wheel.

Practicing those movements on short drives, building your tolerance to sitting upright and making sure you can rotate without pain or pelvic pressure makes for a great start to determining whether you’re ready to drive.
