When to start strength training after surgery

"When can I start lifting weights again?" I hear this question all the time, and my answer often surprises people.

The truth is, you're already strength training. Every time you get up from a chair, carry groceries, or climb stairs, you're using strength.

The real question isn't when to start, but how to progress safely and effectively.

Strength training after surgery isn't about jumping back into your pre-surgery routine. It's about rebuilding the foundation first—focusing on movement quality, range of motion, and core-pelvic coordination.

Without these elements, even starting with light weights can reinforce compensatory patterns… especially if you dealt with pain or had to take a lot of time off before surgery because of your health.

Are you incorporating any strength work into your recovery? If so, what's feeling good? And if not, what questions or concerns do you have about getting started?

Your body is unique, and your approach should be too.
